The Catholic Medium

At the Psychic Fairs there are usually a vast majority of different people. One booth stood out to me in particular, this gal had a huge TV showing floating orbs. I walked up and started a conversation with her. She was very proud because she had filmed all of these spirit orbs and explained to me that spirit orbs are souls that believed nothing during their life, that they had no religion and are stuck in the in between.

Then she stated how she is a medium and her job is to help these souls move on. During this conversation, she also confessed that she was a Catholic. I asked her "how does the church feel with her being in all of this" and she told me that it depended on who she talked to. Some of them don't like it because they always tell her that the Bible says she cannot communicate with the dead and that she can and has filmed/has pictures of them. I then stated "well you know then Satan masks as an angel of light" and she fully agreed with that statement. She then stated she masks herself with the white light and makes sure no darkness is around and uses God when she does these things. After some more conversation I said goodbye and left her booth.

The Truth of the Matter:

This conversation was very interesting because you have a gal who is a practicing Catholic and is also a medium. Which is very contradictory but you also have someone believing that they are communing with the dead.

I want to start with going into what a medium is and why this is contradictory. A medium is defined as someone who serves as a go-between channel or bridge between the human realm and other realms especially those of spirits and the dead.1 And a catholic is defined as someone who practices Catholicism, which they must believe in only one God and that in God there are three divine Persons namely the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.2 They do believe  that Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead on the third day, then sent the Holy Ghost after he ascended.3 Which sounds like modern day Christianity. Where it becomes different is that Catholics believe that Christ established only one church for the whole world and all the people which is the Catholic Church.4 That Christ is her invisible head and the Holy Ghost is her guide; and that there is a visible head which is the Pope who is the successor of St. Peter.5 There is more to Catholicism but that is just a gist of what Catholics believe.

One thing that Catholics do believe is that forms of divination are to be rejected that conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future.6 That consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums are not to be consulted.7

Not just that, the Bible talks about mediums and witchcraft.

Leviticus 20:27 states, “A man or a woman who is a medium or a necromancer shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones; their blood shall be upon them.”

Galatians 5:19-21 states, “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Isaiah 8:19-21 states, “And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living? To the teaching and to the testimony! If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn. They will pass through the land, greatly distressed and hungry. And when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will speak contemptuously against their king and their God, and turn their faces upward.”

So, knowing this, it seems to be a theological impossibility.

The other fact that I want to talk about is the communing with the dead.

Hebrews 9:27 states, “And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment” which means we cannot come back. Our souls do not float around nor do we come back as ghosts. We die and that’s it.

Now there is the question about people claiming that they have seen people and talked to people. Are these actually people? Or are they something else?

Just as I said in the conversation, 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 states, “And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.”

As the verse says, Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Meaning that you could think you are following God but in reality, you are not. You have been deceived by Satan. The verse also says something interesting that Satan’s servants also disguise themselves as righteous. Meaning that they are also tricking and deceiving others.

1 John 4:1-3 states “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.  By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.”

So, test everything and see if it is actually from God because if you are saved then you know the spirit of God and what is righteous. If it doesn’t follow his word, then its probably from the devil himself.
